Beyond the Binaries: Vandana Ramkrishna and the Power of Sound in Storytelling 🎧🎬

In Transit Amazon Prime Series Poster

When stories strive to move hearts, challenge norms, and reflect the unspoken, it is not just the visuals or dialogue that leave an impact—it is also the sound. And behind some of the most powerful sonic landscapes in Indian cinema and streaming content today stands Vandana Ramkrishna, a gifted Production Sound Mixer and proud alumna of the MA Filmmaking Class of 2018–2020 from Annapurna College of Film and Media.

Her most recent work, the critically acclaimed 4-part documentary series "In-Transit", is a profound exploration of love, identity, and the fluidity of gender. Directed by Ayesha Sood and created by Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti, In-Transit premiered on June 13, 2025, on Prime Video India, under the banner of Tiger Baby Productions.

A Sonic Journey Across Stories of Transition

In-Transit follows the journeys of nine individuals across India—each navigating life beyond the binaries of gender. From a young educator in a remote forest to a corporate leader in Mumbai, their stories are poignant, powerful, and deeply personal.

Vandana’s role as the Production Sound Mixer is integral in capturing the raw, unfiltered emotions of these stories. Sound in a documentary isn’t just a technical layer—it’s a silent narrator. It absorbs the silence in a gaze, the quiver in a voice, the ambiance of spaces filled with tension, hope, or celebration. Vandana’s meticulous craft ensures the intimacy of these moments is preserved and heightened.

A Portfolio of Excellence

In-Transit is just the latest in Vandana’s growing list of impressive credits. She has lent her sound expertise to a diverse range of productions, each requiring a different auditory sensibility:

  • 🎞️ Mission Majnu (2023): A spy thriller requiring precision and atmosphere

  • 🎞️ OMG 2 (2023): A socially charged satire blending drama with dialogue-heavy sequences

  • 🎞️ Kadalin Kural (2020): A poetic Tamil indie film rich in ambient storytelling

  • 📺 Made in Heaven Season 2 (2023): A high-end drama series known for its layered characters and urban settings

  • 📺 Mayabazaar – For Sale (2023): A bold Telugu series demanding vibrant and dynamic soundscapes

Across genres and formats, Vandana has brought consistency, quality, and creative insight to every project she touches.

From Student to Industry Professional

At Annapurna College of Film and Media, Vandana honed not only her technical skills but also her understanding of sound as an emotional and narrative force. Her mentors describe her as someone with an exceptional ear and an unwavering commitment to her craft.

Today, she is an inspiration to many aspiring sound professionals—particularly women—looking to break into what has traditionally been a male-dominated space.

The Road Ahead

With In-Transit, Vandana has once again demonstrated how vital sound is in amplifying stories that matter. In a time when representation and authenticity are at the forefront of media, her work helps elevate unheard voices—literally and figuratively.

As we celebrate her achievements, we also look forward to what she will bring to the stories of tomorrow.

🎓 Annapurna College of Film and Media is proud to count Vandana Ramkrishna among its alumni. Her success is a reflection of the immersive, industry-connected learning that the college strives to provide.
