Vanishing

An elderly man has dedicated his entire life to an all-consuming art that ultimately brought him no reward, only profound disappointment and loneliness. Having practiced his craft for decades without ever being seen or heard, he reaches a breaking point where he feels his life has no remaining value. Faced with the reality of having very little time left to live, he writes a final suicide letter, prepared to end his existence because the art he labored over was never acknowledged by an audience. His path toward self-destruction is interrupted when he witnesses a crime, presenting him with an unexpected "final job": accepting a payoff to lie to the world as the sole witness. This role becomes his long-awaited opportunity to finally find fame and "shine," providing the recognition he was denied throughout his artistic career. He embraces the deception with a sense of immunity, reasoning that the legal system holds no power over him because one cannot effectively punish or jail a man who was already prepared to die. The narrative unfolds through the man's detailed testimony to an investigator, a process that peels back the layers of his insufferable nature and the isolation that defined his life. As he weaves his account, the investigator and the audience are forced to confront his flaws and the desperation behind his need for attention. However, the story concludes with the revelation that the man is a completely unreliable narrator; his entire testimony was a fabrication, a final piece of performance art designed to deceive the world one last time.

I was inspired to write and make this story as a result of my own obsession with the craft of storytelling. This is a what if situation of an obsessed artist and what might transpire if he does not get an audience for his craft. I aspire to capture an artist’s flawed obsession towards his craft. And what might result with it.

Komal Maddukuri is an emerging Indian filmmaker and screenwriter based in Hyderabad, with an MA in Filmmaking (Screenwriting and Direction) from Annapurna College of Film and Media. Drawn to stories that examine the complexities of human nature, His work explores themes of identity, morality, memory and social change through character driven narratives that balance emotional intimacy with cinematic scale. He is interested in crafting films that are both visually evocative and emotionally resonant. With a growing body of short form work and feature projects in development, the aim is to create cinema that bridges artistic ambition with broad audience appeal.
